Peru

I know I have not ut anything on here about the rest of the USA, Canda, Orkneys etc trip, but it has been a bit of a frantic month since I got back and now I´m off again!

I arrived in Lima last Wednesday - just before that bit
earthquake hit!

We were in the earthquake - didn´t seem too bad for
us, just the whole building sort of shaking, but
didn´t feel like it would fall down. It just seemed
to go on and on a bit. We didn´t realise how bad it
was till we started hearing the news!

We are staying in the jungle on the eastern side of
the Andes at the moment. Beautiful rainforest, very
humid, lots of mozzies, no hot water, but great food!
we cleared grass and vegetation from a big area using
machetes yesterday - sore shoulders! It´s been fun
meeting the other 20 people on our work team, and
trying to speak some spanish! We couldn´t get through
for a day becuase of the quake, so we had time to
recover from the flight at another centre owned by the
missionar group we are working for. It even had a
swimming pool! (but still no hot water!)
It is so humid that nothing dries properly here, so we
are getting smellier by the minute!
The team is with an organsiation call Oak hall, which operates from Kent, UK. There are 22 of us, mostly English (Claire and I are Aussies, and Margaret is Kiwi) including 5 of us from my church, - Claire, Margaret, myself, David and Ester.
There´s also a mother and Daughter from Alabama, who have been here heps of time (this is Sharon´s 11th trip!) We also have Billy, an American Student who has been here every year since he was 15, and he´s now 21 an has been here three mnths taking teams like us around and interpreting for us into and out of Spanish!
The Rainforest we are in now reminds me so much of where I grew up,a nd we are eating some great tropical fruits, fresh off the trees!
We are off to a traditional village this afternoon
where they dress us up in their clothing and tell us
about their culture.

I can´t really put into words all the things about of
Peru that we´ve seen so far! It is amazing just to
be here and be seeing and hearing what we are, and
being part of building God´s kingdom. We are working
with Scripture union to help with a couple of projects
for street kids.
I won´t have the best access to the internst, but I´ll try to update when I can.....
